<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">On May 6th, Hawkes Library will take part in the nationwide
effort to honor the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution by hosting a
Days of Remembrance performance at First United Methodist Church’s Zachry
Center at 7pm EDT. The one-act version
of I Never Saw Another Butterfly by
Celeste Raspanti will be performed by members of the Lafayette Theatre Academy,
following a performance for the Breman Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum in
Atlanta, Georgia.

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">After the successful production of the full-version of the play
at the Lafayette Society for Performing Arts in LaGrange this January, director
Amy McDow was contacted by a Breman representative inviting the cast to provide
a program for the museum. McDow shares
that, “after that first conversation, I was flooded with emotions. Although we have continuously seen positive effects
of our production locally, I never imagined that we would so strongly touch a
community that has been, and still is, directly impacted by the events we
portrayed.”

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">I Never Saw Another
Butterfly<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;"> shares the story of how children, held in
the Terezín Concentration Camp, used art to inspire, entertain, comfort, and strengthen
themselves and each other. After
liberation, pieces of the children’s artwork, poetry, and prose were found and
used as the source for the material in the play. McDow states, “it is such an honor to continue
sharing the legacy left by these children with those whose lives are dedicated to
preserving Jewish values, culture, and history.”

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">On their first visit to the Breman Museum, the academy students
located many exhibits that directly related to the events in the play,
including finding the names of some of the children whose art and writing they
had studied during their production. Phoebe
Rushan, playing the role of Raya Englanderova in the production, states that “being
in this show has really opened my eyes to the struggles that these kids went
through during the Holocaust. You always
learn about it in school, but being able to read poems and look at pictures,
that these children created, really opens your eyes. It’s beautiful how expressing themselves
through art helped them during these horrible times. This show has been a really educational, but
fun experience.”

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">Cast member Liberty Imes remarks, “I am extremely honored to be
a part of a production like this one, with kids coming together to make
something so beautiful and respectful. I’ll
never forget it.” The cast traveling to Atlanta includes 13 students, in the
sixth through twelfth grades, from Troup, Harris, and Chambers counties.

<span style="color: #353535; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">The cast performs in Atlanta on Yom HaShoah, which is also known
as Holocaust Remembrance Day and marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto
Uprising. It commemorates the lives and
heroism of the people who died in the Holocaust between 1933 and 1945 and pays
tribute to the rescuers who risked their lives to save others. This year, the date of Yom HaShoah is May 5th.

<span style="color: #353535; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">Liam McDonald, cast in the role of Honza, shares, “being a part
of I Never Saw Another Butterfly has
been an amazing and eye-opening time for me.
It’s a very powerful play and I have learned a lot from it. I’m looking forward to performing at the
Breman Museum, as it is going to be a once in a lifetime experience.”

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">On May 6th, the cast will repeat the performance for West Point
and surrounding communities at the Zachry Center. When asked about Hawkes Library’s involvement
in this local event, Michael Markle, a member of the Hawkes Library board,
stated that “the Holocaust was one of the greatest atrocities of recent
history. It impacted our own country and
family members, whether they were personal relatives or those who fought to end
the persecution. The Friends of Hawkes
Library is honored to have the opportunity to sponsor this production as a
remembrance of those who suffered and a reminder that such atrocities still
occur today and should not be tolerated.”<span style="color: #353535; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">The event coincides with the nation’s annual commemoration of
the Holocaust established by Congress and led by the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Information
about the Holocaust and the children of Terezín will be on display at Hawkes
library during the Days of Remembrance.
Handmade butterflies, created by the students will also decorate the
library.

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">“It’s not enough to curse the darkness of the past. We have to
illuminate the future,” explains Holocaust survivor Estelle Laughlin. “On Days
of Remembrance the most important thing to remember is the humanity that is in
all of us to leave the world better for our children and for posterity." Hawkes Library’s Days of Remembrance is free to the general public.
<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">

<span style="color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "palatino"; line-height: 150%;">The performance begins at 7pm at the Zachry Center in West Point. For more information, please visit www.hawkeslibrary.com or contact Amy McDow at amcdow@lsparts.org.

Join the Hawkes Library Artographers this Sunday afternoon to see featured images of West Point, from the viewpoint of youth, ranging in ages from four to eighteen. Since the beginning of the year, Artographers have met regularly at Hawkes to develop technical and artistic skills in photography and they are very excited for the chance to share their work with the community!

In addition to showing their view of West Point, the members will share images that represent how they view the world around them, in their daily life. Many have also selected photographs to demonstrate the best of their personal photography skills.

The Artographers Photography Show will be open to the public from 2 to 4 pm EDT at Hawkes Library in West Point, on Sunday, September 27th. There is no charge to visit the show and refreshments will be served.

For more information about the show or meetings, please contact Amy McDow at 706-518-9089 or amy@amymcdow.com.<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18.76px;">

The Friends of Hawkes Library invite you to meet author Dr. Werner A. Linz this coming Sunday!

From 2 to 4pm, we will host Dr. Linz as he shares his books, "Doggerel" and "Doggerel Two, Doggerel Too". Come meet the author while enjoying refreshments and the comfort of Hawkes library.

Here is a little more information about Dr. Linz and his intriguing life:

Dr. Werner Linz, retired physician, has devoted his caring nature to farm animals and pets at the historic old homeplaces where he now tends family lands and gardens. His lifelong love of music led to his involvement with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, since its inception, as an active board member and past president. He plays his own very European instrument, the concertina, often to an audience of pets and farm animals gathered ‘round the front porch. He has been an active participant at weekly Scottish Country Dance classes where he has served, at times, as leader and has devised several new dances.

He has edited his own as well as others manuscripts and is well known for his “way with words”. His keen sense of humor, coupled with human compassion and his dutiful nature, make for poetry at once lighthearted and thoughtful.
Dr. Linz loves tinkering with and driving his two antique cars, “Eberhard” a 1927 Model T and “Lida” a 1948 Chrysler Windsor, named for their previous owners. For several decades his membership in the Georgia-Alabama Antique Car Club has been a source of joy. In his “spare time” he is the home repairman, plumber, electrician, carpenter, and garbage man.

He and his wife, Catherine have hiked and bicycled, either on their own (with excellent detailed maps) or with international groups, in Ireland, England, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and the eastern and western United States. Locally, they have led annual Spring Elderhostel bicycle tours at Callaway Gardens.

Farm animals and pets, friends and family, places, “every day happenings”, special occasions, bicycling and hiking, music and fun are the subject of most of his verse.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550631501369976476.post-19182813413751552642012-09-24T20:45:00.002-07:002012-09-24T20:47:32.506-07:00Hawkes celebrates 90 years!!!

The Friends of Hawkes Library began its “Come and Create” Summer Educational Series in May. From 2pm to 4pm (EST) on the first Sunday afternoon of each month, a guest artist will be teaching a new skill at Hawkes Library in West Point.

The May seminar focused on creating butterfly gardens and was taught by Sharon Cowart, owner of Shady Gardens Nursery. Thea McElvy, a talented local artist, will teach jewelry making techniques in June. Guests of the July workshop will create glass pendants featuring personal photographs under the instruction of Amy McDow of Artistic Moments: Photography and Design. The August workshop will introduce a unique technique of creating watercolor flowers and will be led by local watercolor artist, Becky Guinn. The West Point Woman's Club will be hosting each event.

The workshops include the costs of supplies for the “make and take” projects and are $15 for members of the Friends of Hawkes Library ($10 annual membership) and $25 for the general public. Space is limited and pre-registration is required for all workshops. Please contact Hawkes Library at 706-645-1549 for more information or to sign up for one or more of these events.
